Airbus has confirmed with deep regret that one of its A350-900 aircraft, operated by Japan Airlines under flight JAL516, was involved in a catastrophic accident shortly after 17:47 local time on January 2, 2024. The flight, originating from Sapporo New Chitose Airport, was en route to Haneda International Airport when the incident occurred. All 367 passengers and 12 crew members aboard the Airbus were able to evacuate safely.

Details of the Collision

The Airbus A350, while landing at Haneda Airport, tragically collided with a DHC-8 aircraft. Japanese authorities have reported that out of the six individuals on the DHC-8, five have unfortunately lost their lives. The precise details and dynamics of the collision are currently under investigation and remain unclear at this time.

Aircraft Information

The aircraft involved, registered as JA13XJ, was identified as MSN 538 and had been a part of Japan Airlines’ fleet since its delivery from Airbus on November 10, 2021. Equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines, the aircraft was a relatively recent addition to the fleet.

Ongoing Investigation and Airbus’ Response

In compliance with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 13 guidelines, Airbus has committed to providing technical support to both the Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses (BEA) of France and the Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB), who are leading the investigation. Airbus has dispatched a team of specialists to Japan to assist the authorities in their investigative efforts.
