Hanoi, Vietnam

Vietnam targets 17-18 million international visitors in 2024, building on 2023’s success with 12.6 million arrivals and a robust tourism infrastructure, amidst global economic and environmental challenges.

Hanoi, Vietnam – The Vietnam National Authority of Tourism convened a conference to review the achievements of 2023 and set forth objectives for 2024. The country’s tourism sector successfully achieved its target by welcoming 12.5 million international visitors last year.

2023: A Year of Robust Growth

Vietnam’s tourism industry reported a significant influx of 12.6 million international visitors and 108 million domestic trips in 2023, with an estimated total revenue of 678 trillion VND. Notably, Vietnam was recognized as the “World’s Leading Heritage Destination” for the fourth time and “Asia’s Leading Destination” for the fifth time, among other awards by the World Travel Awards.

Expansion and Development

The year 2023 witnessed a resurgence in tourism activities, marked by the registration of numerous new travel businesses and the increase in tour guides. Luxury tourism infrastructure also saw substantial growth, with many 4-5 star accommodations being operationalized. By year-end, Vietnam had 3,921 international travel businesses, a 1,027 business increase from 2022. The total number of tour guides reached 37,331, with 10,004 new tour guide cards issued during the year. The country boasts approximately 38,000 tourist accommodation establishments, including 247 five-star (80,896 rooms) and 368 four-star (50,716 rooms) facilities.

Regional Growth Highlights

Several regions exhibited strong growth in tourist numbers, with notable increases in destinations like Hanoi, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Thanh Hoa, Khanh Hoa, Quang Nam, Quang Binh, Binh Thuan, Quang Ninh, Da Nang, and Lam Dong.

2024 Outlook and Challenges

Despite the recovery in 2023, the global tourism industry faces numerous challenges in 2024, including economic slowdown, inflation, geopolitical conflicts, and climate change. Domestically, Vietnam maintains a stable socio-economic environment with controlled inflation. However, risks of pandemics and natural disasters due to climate change remain prevalent.

Strategic Goals for 2024

In light of these challenges and forecasts, Vietnam’s tourism industry is ambitiously aiming to attract 17-18 million international visitors and serve 110 million domestic trips in 2024, targeting a total revenue of approximately 840 trillion VND. This goal reflects Vietnam’s commitment to strengthening its position as a premier global tourism destination, despite the dynamic global landscape.
