TTM 2010 postponed but TTF remains on track

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has postponed the Thailand Travel Mart (TTM) Plus Amazing Gateway to the Greater Mekong Subregion (TTM+) that was due to be held at the Impact Muang Thong Thani Exhibition Centre during 2-4 June, 2010, until further notice.

A separate event targeted at the domestic tourism sector, the Thailand Tourism Festival 2010 (TTF), that was to be held alongside between 4-13 June, 2010, is to go ahead but has been reduced to five days, between 9-13 June, 2010. The venue will remain unchanged: Challenger Hall 1-3, Impact Muang Thong Thani.

The decisions were made over the weekend at a special meeting called by TAT Governor Suraphon Svetasreni. After intense consultation and discussion with the private sector in the light of the recent situation in Bangkok, we decided that the TTM+ would not achieve the set outcomes as we had anticipated. He noted, however, that the event had only been postponed, not cancelled entirely, and would be reorganised as soon as the situation permits.

The TTM+, first organised in 2001, is designed to promote tourism to Thailand and the GMS countries, and is specifically structured to help promote the many small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) who develop creative and innovative products but lack the financial resources to market them on the global stage.

This year, about 400 sellers from Thailand and GMS countries had registered to participate. It was also expected to attract about 353 tourism business operators and hosted buyers worldwide, most of whom were from top producing markets; such as, India, Russia, USA, UK, Korea, Australia, Germany, Canada, Korea, and Malaysia.

TTF 2010 would proceed in order to give a boost to domestic tourism, which has often proved to be a saving grace during times of crisis in the past.

Mr. Suraphon said, “This is the 50th anniversary of the founding of TAT and it is our duty and responsibility to promote both the international and domestic tourism industries, especially for the benefit of the private sector, which has been impacted by the political unrest. With all the Thai people now coming together to get the country back on its feet, promoting domestic tourism is a logical strategy. Thus, we felt it appropriate to proceed with TTF, as it is important to ensure that we make an “emotional recovery” first as part of the effort to regain our strength.

Most of the participants in TTF are the country’s small and medium sized enterprises, so this event would open up opportunities for consumers to come and check out the new tourism products, facilities, and services that are emerging, as well as promote travelling in the various regions of Thailand.”
