Tourism opportunites between Istanbul and Greece during the global crisis

By calling attention to the common grounds and proximities between the two countries, TUROB (Touristic Hotels & Investors Association, Turkey) made a “neighborship tourism invitation” to Greece during “Philoxenia 2008”, Tourism Fair. The strategy of the invitation was formed from the point of effectiveness that jointly developing and increasing of the neighborhood advantages would bring mutual benefits for the both countries’ economies, particularly during the global crisis. 

The “neighborship tourism invitation” made by TUROB to Greek tourism professionals and people during the “Philoxenia 2008”, was based on the mutual benefits of the geographical closeness and the interest and curiosity that arise from common cultural and historical roots. As a first step within this context, by taking Istanbul as the pilot destination with its identity of the closest metropolis to the Northern Greece as well as the most significant place according to preferences of Greek people, TUROB proposed to organize reciprocal tours between “Northern Greece and Istanbul”. It was also pointed out the existing advantages those could be turned the following mutual acquisitions when they are jointly carried out within such an approach:

Economic and Environmental Acquisitions: The saving that could be gain through the geographical closeness to Istanbul, particularly in terms of time and costs of transport. / The availability of wider use of the alternative transport systems comparing to airways, such as the rail line between Thessalonica and Istanbul. / From the Greek tourists’ point of view, the possibility of taking the advantage of enhanced shopping facilities of Istanbul, from the Turkish tourists point of view, the opportunities of enjoying the entertainment venues in the Northern Greece. / The suitability of weekend tourism.

Qualitative Acquisitions: The satisfaction as a result of rich variation of the diversified tourism products in terms of quality –and by all means in terms of quantity- those to be mutually presented both in Istanbul destination and in Northern Greece. / In Istanbul side the recent novelties those have been adding on the occasion of being the European Capital of Cultures, 2010 project.

TUROB further stated that in the case of jointly taking action and supporting the common infrastructures the seasonal tourism could be expanded to whole year in both countries and the next common step might be an “Eastern Mediterranean Tourism” project with the participation of other neighboring countries as well.
