A holiday with a difference –first stop– Northern Iraq

Explore the road less travelled with Rotana

The hotel industry is responding to calls from hardened travellers demanding new experiences in some of the world’s more off-the-beaten-track destinations. Rotana has taken the lead by announcing the development of a new hotel in Northern Iraq.

British tourists are turning their backs on the looming recession and heading into the unknown. While some still want a beautiful beach, Rotana, one of the leading hotel management companies in the Middle East, offers alternatives for the more adventurous traveller.

Rotana is widely known for its flagship hotel and spa properties in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Fujairah and Sharm El Sheikh. However, the hotel company also has properties in some of the world’s developing tourist destinations including Beirut, Syria and Kuwait and has recently been awarded the rights to build a hotel in the Kurdish region of Northern Iraq.

The world-class hotel will be built in Erbil where the Kurdish Regional Government is trying to attract visitors and turn the city into an entry point to Iraq. The five-star Erbil Rotana property is scheduled to open in 2009.

The Lebanese capital of Beirut was once a no-go-zone for tourists, but since the civil unrest came to an end in 1990, the city has undergone major reconstruction. The historic city centre has been re-designed and the marina, pubs and nightlife districts have once again made it a popular attraction.

Rotana has two hotels in Beirut; the Gefinor Rotana and the Hazmieh Rotana. Gefinor Rotana is conveniently located in the heart of Beirut and has easy access to the exclusive neighborhood of Verdun, the traditional winding streets of Achrafieh and the rebuilt Downtown area. Lebanese hospitality blends with international expertise at Hazmieh Rotana, a well-located hotel with a relaxing pool area and spa facilities.

Syria is home to a wealth of architecture and culture, most prominently in Damascus, where tradition meets modernity. Antique buildings are being given a new lease of life with revitalising renovations and the ‘Old City’ evokes the golden days of Damascus with bazaars and blind alleys, minarets, mosques and fountain courtyards, street-cart vendors and coffeehouses.

The Queen Centre Arjaan is a stylish hotel that has recently been rebranded as Rotana introduces its Hotel Apartments range of properties. Guests will enjoy the fitness facilities and the hotel’s great location, next to the Queen’s Shopping Centre, home to 85 international deluxe brands.

The opulence and glitz of Kuwait is complemented by Arabian hospitality and a gentle introduction to a Muslim-influenced country. Mosques, souks and other traces of bygone Bedouin days are set against a skyline of shimmering skyscrapers, built on the profits of this oil-rich city.

The glamorous Al Manshar Rotana Hotel is part of an entertainment complex on the shores of Al Kout Waterfront, the largest of its kind in the south of Kuwait and just 15 minutes from the city centre. A roof-top swimming pool is the pinnacle of this hotel’s spa, fitness and dining facilities.

For travellers looking for a more gentle adventure or simply pure relaxation, Rotana has a prodigious portfolio of hotel and apartment properties in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Fujairah, Al Ain, Sharjah and Egypt.

Rotana has an enviable expansion plan in action which will see 40 more properties opening throughout the Middle East by 2012. Rotana will be moving into the new markets of Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Ras Al Khaimah and Oman, as well as opening additional hotels in Beirut, Khartoum, Syria, Abu Dhabi, Fujairah and Dubai.
