2. Singapore: Unique Selling Points

You could say it’s one of Singapore’s best kept secrets – truly, Singapore boasts some of the region’s best attractions in one small, convenient island.

You can walk on the wild side with many award-winning nature-themed attractions like the Underwater World Singapore, the Zoological Gardens, the Night Safari and the Jurong Bird Park. At these attractions, you can marvel at the majesty of the natural world and how the exhibits have been sensitively designed. Whether it’s having breakfast besides flamingos, watching an elephant show of swimming with pink dolphins, there is plenty to keep you and your family engaged for days.

If you prefer something more horticultural, you must visit the gem of Singapore’s parks – the beautifully landscaped Singapore Botanic Gardens, and the colourful National Orchid Garden within. If you want to discover how orchids are cultivated in Singapore, Orchidville and the Mandai Orchid Gardens are also musts on your itinerary. For something off the beaten track, check out some of the farms in Singapore. Singapore may seem uniformly urban at first glance but dig deeper, you will find interesting tropical fish, goat, frog and mushroom farms.

Then there are the different museums in Singapore. These promise to give you a window into the civilisations of Asia – discover what Peranakan culture is, or the subtlety in Islamic art and Chinese calligraphy, or the dramatic stories behind the historic Chinatown.

Singapore also is a city for the arts. Take your pick from traditional ethnic dances to the cutting edge theatre or an entertaining blockbuster musical. One good showcase of Singapore’s artistic talent is the annual Singapore Arts Festival in June. Popular artists too have made Singapore part of the concert circuit and recent years have seen top stars like José Carreras, Elton John, The Rolling Stones, Kiri Te Kanawa and Dian Krall leave audiences here spellbound. If you prefer the visual medium, there are numerous museums with excellent collections and travelling exhibitions, while in galleries downtown, you can purchase a beautiful piece of local ceramic of a painting from an up-and-coming Vietnamese artist.

With the arts increasingly integrated into the lives of Singaporeans, the Lion City has become a flourishing space for local and visiting artists, and provides many possibilities for the arts-lover or a visitor looking for a memorable night out.
