JNTO launches arabic website

In June, Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) launched an Arabic-language website, alyaban.travel, to provide tourism information to travellers from Arabic-speaking countries. This is the 12th language JNTO now offers tourism information in.

In 2009, Japan Tourism Agency did market research in the UAE and Saudi Arabia to evaluate the potential of these new markets. Eighty-five percent of those questioned indicated they are interested in going to Japan. Despite this, the number of visitors to Japan from Gulf countries was just 8,249 in 2010.

“The number of visitors from the Middle East to Japan is still small at the moment, but then air links from the region to Tokyo are still relatively new. Emirates and Etihad started flying to Tokyo in March 2010 and Qatar in April 2010. JNTO does not yet have any budget to actively promote Japan as a holiday destination to the Middle East market, but we do hope this new Arabic JNTO website will help convince anyone considering a visit to Japan that it is a fantastic destination for a holiday,” said Kylie Clark of Japan National Tourism Organization’s London Office.

JNTO is optimistic that the Middle East will show strong growth in visitor numbers to Japan over the coming years. Evidence of this was seen at the Janadriya Festival in Saudi Arabia this April, where Japan was “guest of honour”, demonstrating the country’s traditions, modern lifestyle and cultural shows. The Japan booth was very popular, even though it was so soon after the 11 March earthquake in East Japan.

As there had been almost no tourist information about Japan in Arabic before, JNTO expects the website will be used by those planning a trip to Japan.

JNTO Arabic website contains content on the following 3 points:
1) ‘Appeal’ of Japanese countryside and main sightseeing spots.
2) ‘Practical information’ on shopping, food and transportation.
3) ‘Basic information’ to plan a trip to Japan.

The website utilises many photos so people can see the attraction of sightseeing places at a glance. It also includes information about food ingredients and preparation of typical dishes and addresses of mosques in Japan. To reduce language difficulties, the website has conversation lists written in Arabic, Japanese and English.
