An online cruise travel agency has revealed its ‘cruise holiday survival guide;’ sharing tips on the things that all cruisers need to know when embarking on a cruise holiday.
With the New Year now here, an online cruise travel agency has revealed a survival guide for those who are considering a cruise holiday in 2012. Preparing for a cruise for the first time can be tricky, as some of the things that are needed when cruising can be slightly different to the requirements of a holiday on dry-land; so the guide was developed with an aim to help cruisers best prepare themselves for a holiday on-sea.
In a bid to help all those who are considering embarking on a cruise this year, Bonvoyage.co.uk has revealed the top things needed for a cruise holiday.
Chris Brown, co-founder of bonvoyage.co.uk, has given his advice on the top eight things need by passengers embarking on a cruise:
1. Sun Cream
Much like any holiday in a hot country, a cruiser will need to stock up on a variety of factors of sun protection. When onboard a cruise liner and floating on the ocean the sun is very powerful, more so than when on dry land, so you need to be protected. The sea air may make it feel cooler, but don’t let it fool you, as the sun is extremely strong when out at sea. There’s no need to panic if you forget, as the shops onboard will have a shelf full of sun creams, although they may well be slightly more pricey than in the shops at home.
2. A good book
There is always plenty to do onboard a cruise ship, whether it be taking a dip in the onboard pool or drifting in and out of the variety of shops. On some days it is nice to just lay back and absorb the sun on the deck chairs or sun-loungers, so be sure to take a good book that will keep you hooked as you relax. Not to worry too much if you forget, as most ships have well-stocked libraries and book shops onboard, which enable you to borrow/buy a range of novels.
3. Plug adapters
Cruise liners such as P&O have UK sockets onboard, as do a few others, however it is always better to be safe than sorry as a few cruise ships do have European or American socket fittings. It’s therefore always best to take a travel plug adaptor on board to make sure all of your gadgets and electronic items can remain charged.
4. Tour books
It is well worth investing in tour books for the countries you are visiting, to ensure that you can soak up all the culture the country has to offer. That way, you can plan your days on dry land efficiently; making sure you can fit in all the sights you wish to see before you head back out to sea.
5. Travel pills
Even the most experienced cruiser could experience sea sickness. Whilst it isn’t a common feeling as the sheer size of cruise liners means you can very rarely feel the bumps of the waves; it is always a good idea to be prepared, especially if you are travelling with children.
6. Varied clothing
When on a cruise, you are likely to enjoy a great variety of adventures and experiences. Dining on a cruise can be an experience in itself and can be worthy of a tux or ball-gown, and you may well also stop off in countries that require very different clothing, such as hiking boots or even a raincoat! It is therefore a good idea to take a variety of clothing with you, to make sure you are prepared whatever the weather or occasion.
7. Camera
Much like every holiday experience, a camera is an absolute must have when on a cruise. Digital Camera HQ recommends that if you are taking a digital camera, always remember to pack any batteries or memory cards that you may need.
8. Travel Insurance and I.D.
Again, just like most holidays abroad, it is better to have travel insurance when embarking on a cruise than not; in fact, many cruise liners state in the terms and conditions that all passengers must have travel insurance. When booking travel insurance for a cruising holiday it is worth investigating which type of insurance is needed as in some cases cruise insurance is different to other holiday insurance.
It is worth shopping around as well, as costs can vary greatly and you can save yourself a great deal of money by checking out what deals are available to you. It’s also worth having a photocopy of passports and travel insurance documents with you, just in case they were to get misplaced.
