Some 30 countries have confirmed their participation at the inaugural Commonwealth Tourism Ministers Meeting to be held in Kuala Lumpur, from 18 to 21 March 2004.
The countries include Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Cyprus, Dominica, Fiji, Ghana, Grenada, Kenya, Kiribati, Malawi, Maldives, Malta, Mozambique, Namibia, New Zealand, Nigeria, St Lucia, St Vincent & The Grenadines, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Tonga, Tanzania, Vanuatu and the United Kingdom.
More countries are expected to confirm their attendance with the Commonwealth Secretariat in London, according to the local Secretariat.
Malaysia will host the first ever Commonwealth Tourism Ministers Meeting aimed at addressing travel and tourism issues involving Commonwealth member-countries, such as the exchange of tourism information, developing common security arrangements and the setting up of the Commonwealth Tourism Promotion Centre, among others.
The meeting will be officiated by Malaysia`s Prime Minister the Honourable Dato` Seri Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi at 5pm on Friday, 19 March 2004.
The meeting will be preceded by the Senior Officials Meeting on 18 and 19 March 2004 and a Commonwealth Business Forum on 19 and 20 March 2004.
The inaugural Commonwealth Travel Mart 2004 which will run concurrently during 18 to 21 March 2004 at the Malaysia International Exhibition & Convention Centre (MIECC) will see approximately 500 participants from within and outside the Commonwealth countries exhibiting their tourism products and conducting travel trade business meetings.
The Commonwealth Tourism Ministers Meeting marks another international event organised by Malaysia in recent years.
Malaysia has hosted various regional and international conferences including the 13th Non-Aligned Movement and the 10th OIC Summits in February and October last year which was attended by 114 countries. The last major Commonwealth event organised by Malaysia was the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in October 1989 which attracted more than 50 countries.
