According to a research of Airports Council International (ACI<.>) September 2000 results from over 610 airports worldwide show passenger traffic rising 6 percent, cargo 4 percent and movements 1 percent compared with September 1999. For the first nine months of the year, passenger traffic was up 6 percent, cargo 7 percent and movements 1 percent.

In September 2000, passenger traffic rose in all regions. Growth was highest in Africa (+13 percent) and Asia/Pacific (+11 percent), followed by Europe (+9 percent), the Middle East (+7 percent), Latin America/Caribbean and North America (+3 percent each). London-Heathrow (5.898 million passengers) overtook Atlanta-Hartsfield (5.894 million) to become the world`s busiest airport. Chicago-O`Hare (5.870 million) came in a close third. Hong Kong (+18 percent), Madrid Barajas (+16 percent), Paris-CDG (+13 percent) and Singapore (+11 percent) are the fastest growing airports among the top 30 airports worldwide.

Double-digit growth rate in cargo continued in Asia/Pacific (+14 percent). Cargo handled was also up in Africa (+9 percent) and Europe (+8 percent) and remained unchanged in the Middle East. However, it was down in North America (-1 percent) and Latin America/Caribbean (-3 percent). The world`s busiest cargo airport, Memphis, handled almost 210,000 metric tonnes (+3 percent), followed closely by Hong Kong with 206,000 metric tonnes (+16 percent). Beijing and Taipei had each +23 percent rise in cargo handled, the highest for the month.

Aircraft movements grew in Asia/Pacific (+6 percent), Africa (+5 percent), the Middle East (+4 percent), Europe (+2 percent), and Latin America/Caribbean (+1 percent). They were down in North America (-1 percent).
