BENGALURU – The travel and tourism industry in India has rebounded from the pandemic, with job postings for hospitality jobs surging by 66% from June 2022 to 2023. This is a significant turnaround from the 60% decline in job demand during 2019-2020 and the subsequent 7% dip in the following year.
The sector showed remarkable resilience and adaptability by embracing the changing customer preferences. Curated experiences for “staycations,” “workcations,” and solo trips have become the new norm, offering customers personalized and safe travel options. Technology played a vital role in this transformation, integrating seamless digital experiences into every aspect of the hospitality journey.
This resurgence not only signifies a hopeful future for the industry but also kindles optimism among job seekers, as there’s a 3% increase in their interest to join the hospitality sector. This can be attributed to the variety of benefits and incentives available to the professionals in the industry. Apart from compensation, the travel agent industry also offers performance based travel discounts and commission. With a new era of innovative and customer-centric offerings, the travel and tourism industry in India is poised for a bright and exciting chapter ahead.
According to Indeed’s data, Delhi (33%), Mumbai (6%), and Bengaluru (5%) are the top three cities posting for the most sought-after jobs in the travel sector. Demand for jobs in tier 2 cities like Mohali and Coimbatore is also on the rise, with 4% each. Travel agent positions lead the demand for job roles by 60% in the last year. Job postings in the hospitality sector have witnessed a significant increase in Delhi (20%), Mumbai (7%), and Bengaluru (6%). Moreover, job seekers’ interest in these cities has also seen a steady rise, with Delhi (19%), Mumbai (9%), and Bangalore (5.29%) showing notable increments in job seekers exploring opportunities in the industry.
Commenting on the data, Sashi Kumar, Head of Sales, Indeed India said: “The travel and tourism industry in India has made a remarkable comeback from the pandemic, with a significant surge in job postings for hospitality positions. According to the Ministry of Tourism, 21.1 million Indians traveled abroad in 2022 which is a large uptick from 8.6 million the previous year. This positive turnaround comes after a challenging period of decline, showing signs of a promising future.The GenZ and millennial travel influencers have also played a key role in boosting tourism. Travelers are actively looking for budget friendly experiences, increasing the demand for travel consultants, who can curate a safe, time-intensive and cost-effective experience.”
According to data by the Bureau of Immigration, the number of foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in India from January to April 2023 has reached 79% of the FTAs during the same period in 2019. Overall, there is a positive outlook on job opportunities in the hospitality, travel, and tourism sector in India.
