BANGKOK, THAILAND – The newly appointed Prime Minister of Thailand, Mr. Srettha Thavisin engaged with key representatives from Thailand’s travel and hospitality sector as well as with airlines representatives, unveiling a series of progressive measures aimed at invigorating the nation’s tourism landscape. During a pivotal meeting with tourism business operators in Phang-nga province, the Prime Minister addressed critical concerns while outlining strategies to drive growth across the industry.

Extension of Tourist Visa Validities and Streamlined Immigration Procedures

One of the most significant announcements made by Prime Minister Thavisin was the contemplation of extending tourist visa validities from the current 30 days to a more accommodating 90 days. This progressive move, aimed at enhancing the appeal for foreign tourists, demonstrates the government’s commitment to facilitating seamless travel experiences. Additionally, the Prime Minister acknowledged the importance of simplifying immigration procedures, ensuring convenience and ease for incoming tourists.

Security Considerations for Visa Exemption Proposal

While addressing the call from certain tourism business operators to exempt entry visas for tourists from China, India, and Russia, Prime Minister Thavisin highlighted the gravity of security implications associated with such a decision. The government intends to exercise careful consideration before taking any steps in this direction, underscoring the significance of maintaining a delicate balance between promoting tourism and upholding national security.

Empowering Local Communities and Nurturing Unique Tourism Experiences

The meeting underscored the government’s dedication to promoting tourism at the grassroots level. Discussions encompassed the possibility of revitalizing an old airport in Phang-nga to accommodate small commercial planes. Furthermore, the focus was placed on bolstering tourism in local communities, fostering the sale of indigenous products and augmenting the incomes of local residents.

Approximately 3,000 communities with untapped potential for local tourism development were identified, but the absence of proper registration has precluded them from accessing state support. Prime Minister Thavisin expressed the government’s commitment to addressing this issue and empowering these communities, aligning with the broader goal of inclusive economic growth.

Cooperative Efforts with Airlines and Aviation Authorities

In anticipation of the upcoming peak tourist season during the fourth quarter of the year, Prime Minister Thavisin held discussions with representatives from eight airlines, Airports of Thailand (AoT), and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). The government is keen to collaboratively prepare for an anticipated influx of tourists, subsequently stimulating the economy.

In attendance were a distinguished group of airline CEOs, including Chai Eamsiri of Thai Airways International, Woranate Laprabang of Thai VietJet Air, Santisuk Klongchaiya of Thai AirAsia, Tassapon Bijleveld of Thai AirAsia X, Chaiyong Rattanapaisansuk of Thai Smile Airways, Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth of Bangkok Airways, Aswin Yangkirativorn of Thai Lion Air, and Wutthiphum Jurangkool of Nok Air. The meeting fostered a collaborative spirit, aligning their strategies with the government’s vision for tourism elevation.

Kerati Kitmanawat, President of AoT, revealed that discussions had centered on strategies to accommodate increased flights from China at Thailand’s main airports. The alignment of these efforts is poised to create a conducive environment for enhanced tourism arrivals. Suttipong Kongpool, director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) also attended the meeting.

A United Vision for Tourism

Prime Minister Thavisin assured the meeting participants that his commitment to fostering tourism extends to all provinces, irrespective of their political affiliations. The Prime Minister’s intention to be a leader for all Thais underscores his dedication to building a prosperous tourism sector across various regions.

In conclusion, the Prime Minister’s engagement with travel and hospitality professionals signifies a progressive stride towards revitalizing Thailand’s tourism industry. The proposed measures, including extended visa validities, enhanced immigration procedures, and collaborative efforts with aviation stakeholders, underscore the government’s commitment to sustained growth and resilience within the sector. As the nation navigates the pathway to recovery, these initiatives hold the potential to unlock new vistas of economic prosperity while providing unparalleled experiences to visitors.
