Celebrate Penghu: The “Pearl of the Taiwan Strait”

LOS ANGELES, California – Taiwan Tourism Bureau is thrilled to celebrate the PBS travel series, Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscope, and its episode, “Taiwan’s Penghu Islands,” which recently garnered an award for Outstanding Directing in a Lifestyle/Culinary/Travel Program.

 

Having partnered with the travel series to share the unique culture and unparalleled beauty of this outstanding destination, Taiwan Tourism Bureau is excited to support the terrific series that was honored at the 44th Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards on April 29 in Pasadena, California.

 

Known as the “Pearl of Taiwan Strait,” these picturesque islands are some of the best-kept secrets among Taiwanese locals, which are now gaining international attention for their festive celebrations and natural attractions.

 

Every year, locals gather to celebrate the Penghu Fireworks Festival at Penghu, the largest of the outlying islands. The most anticipated event of the summer takes place at the Guanyin Pavilion where the ocean bay and Siying Rainbow Bridge meet. A brilliant display of fireworks launches just 300 meters away from the viewing area — setting the skies ablaze in a close-up display that is entirely safe for spectators. Fireworks over the rainbow-hued bridge light up the bay in a spectacular wash of color.

 

These islands also draw visitors in search of relaxing seaside adventures. The landscape differs from the mountainous main island of Taiwan with relatively flat terrain, white-sand beaches and pristine coral reefs in crystal-blue waters. Its climate makes Penghu ideal for destination for surfing, snorkeling and fishing, and its geographical position creates the perfect conditions for windsurfing and kite surfing. The reefs and beaches are protected by the local government, ensuring they will be well-preserved for years to come.

 

The islands boast a collection of ancient temples dedicated to the goddess Mazu, the guardian and protector of fishermen. In the city of Magong, Tianhou Temple dates back to 1592 and is thought by many to be the oldest religious structure in Taiwan. Other intriguing architectures include Erkan Chen Historic Residence — beautifully detailed traditional houses that once were the homes of scholars — and the Xiyu Western Fort, constructed in 1887.

 

The main islands of Penghu are accessible from Taiwan by boat or air, with enticing celebrations, activities and rich cultural experiences available all year long.
