Hawaiian Airlines adds capacities to Australia

US carrier Hawaiian Airlines takes into consideration positive perspectives of growth from Australia’s outbound market to Hawaii. The airline will launch new flights to Brisbane this winter.

HAWAII- From 27 November this year, Hawaiian Airlines will commence nonstop flights between Honolulu and Brisbane. The service will run three times a week, bringing the airline’s weekly flights between Australia and Honolulu up to ten frequencies. This represents an addition of more than 40,000 seats a year. Hawaiian Airlines confirmed that a Boeing 767-300ER aircraft seating 262 passengers in Business and Economy classes will begin just on time to cater for the Australian summer holidays’ season. The flight will take nine hours to link Brisbane to Honolulu.

According to Hawaiian Airlines president and chief executive Mark Dunkerley, the new flights will likely boost travel from Australia. “Hawaii is one of the most popular and fastest growing international holiday destinations for travellers from Australia,” he said. Hawaii is indeed proving increasingly popular for Australians. According to a market study released earlier this year by the Hawaii’s Tourism Authority (HTA), Australia outbound departures to Hawaii grew by 32.1% in 2011 compared to 10% for the whole outbound market. In 2011, tourists from Australia reached a record of 189,070 arrivals.

This favourable evolution is due to the strengthening of the Aussie Dollar compared to its US counterpart (Last year average value was 1.09 US$ for 1 A$) but also due to the availability of cheap air fares to the State. Qantas budget subsidiary Jetstar is now operating five flights a week between Sydney and Honolulu. Three airlines currently serve already Sydney.

For 2012, the trend seems to continue with Australian arrivals up by 55% for the first quarter compared to the same period of 2011. The number of tourists from Australia is likely to pass for the first time the 200,000 mark. Hawaiian Airlines new flights are estimated to generate additional spending of US$80 million from Australian tourists in Hawaii, the HTA said.
