Long, strong growth for Australia’s international visitor numbers

Mr Shelley said ATEC, established over 40 years ago to help support and promote Australia's tourism industry internationally, was a pioneer in driving Chinese inbound tourism.

Australia’s export tourism industry has enjoyed a staggering 40 years of growth, with their desirability as an international holiday destination going from strength to strength and continuing to reveal a prosperous future.

“Our tourism industry is Australia’s economic powerhouse and has performed fantastically over the past 40 years despite a number of global impacts and this reflects the true quality and desirability of destination Australia,” ATEC Managing Director, Peter Shelley said.

“While we can see from figures released by the ABS today we’ve had staggering growth from the China market, many markets have remained stable sources over the past 40 years with seven of these markets maintaining a place in our top 10 source countries since 1976.”

Mr Shelley said ATEC, established over 40 years ago to help support and promote Australia’s tourism industry internationally, was a pioneer in driving Chinese inbound tourism.

“ATEC played a major leadership role in working with the Government to establish Australia’s Approved Destination Status (ADS) by providing the framework for industry standards and commitment to the trade which enabled the bilateral agreement, thus opening the door for visitors from China.

“ATEC membership provided a platform for operators to demonstrate their professionalism and ability to provide quality service to the Chinese visitor and helped cement Australia as one of the first western countries to welcome Chinese leisure tourists.

“Since the ADS scheme began in 1999, Australia’s Chinese visitor market and industry relationships have continued to expand to the point where it has grown from only 500 visitors in 1976 to 1.2 million today.

“This year also marks the celebration of the China-Australia Year of Tourism and we expect this remarkable growth to continue throughout 2017.

“Across the board, Australia’s tourism industry is showing strong growth, with visitor arrivals up 8.7% in the 12 months to November 2016 and our tourism industry is continuing to strive to maintain this momentum while delivering a high quality experience to all international visitors.”
