Workshops at TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference

A programme of four region-specific workshops has been organised for the first day of TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference in Singapore in May.

After the Opening Plenary of the Conference on Monday 12th May, which takes the challenging theme ‘Asia: shaping the world’, delegates will be invited to choose between two workshops, with a further two workshops and a Closing Plenary in the afternoon.

Workshop A, moderated by Dermot Davitt, Vice Chairman and Editorial Director, The Moodie Report, will focus on ‘East Asia: China, Japan And Korea’.
The workshop will explore East Asia, widely considered a powerhouse of global travel retail, from the perspective of senior speakers from the region, including China Duty Free Group, NAA Retailing and Incheon International Airport Corp. Delegates will hear how consumer behaviour in China, Japan and Korea is evolving, and how infrastructure developments in those markets will lead to new opportunities for retailers and brands.

‘Australia and New Zealand’ is the subject of Workshop B which will be moderated by Gary Scattergood, Editor, Duty Free News International.
With impressive airport retail environments and enthusiastic duty free shoppers, not to mention a number of key retail tenders on the horizon, Australasia is set to draw the spotlight over the next year. This workshop will explore future travel retail opportunities with contributions from market experts including Garry Stock, Chairman, JR Duty Free, Richard Barker, General Manager of Retail and Commercial, Auckland Airport and Matthieu Mercier, CEO, LS travel retail Pacific.

After networking over lunch, provided by TFWA, delegates will choose between two afternoon workshops.

Workshop C ‘South-East Asia’ will be moderated by Doug Newhouse, Editorial Director, Travel Retail Business.
From established hubs such as Singapore Changi and Hong Kong International to rapidly emerging markets such as Indonesia and Vietnam, South-East Asia is a patchwork of diverse travel retail locations and some of the most profitable travel links in the world. Blessed with millions of brand-conscious consumers, retail tenders in the region are hotly contested. Some of the companies seeking to exploit the region’s potential will lead the workshop including Robert Waloni, Director and Board Member, Angkasa Pura Airports in Indonesia.

Workshop D ‘India and South Asia’, moderated by John Sutcliffe, Travel Retail Consultant, will look at a market whose true potential in duty free and travel retail is only just beginning to be fulfilled. New terminals at key airports in India have changed perceptions of the market, while the rise of the Indian middle class is creating market opportunities. The panel, including Arghya Chakravarty, CEO, Times OOH, Paul Topping, Director and Board Member, Flemingo International and Duncan Lawley, CEO, Delhi Duty Free, will explore India and key markets elsewhere in South Asia, including Sri Lanka, where infrastructure developments are designed to enhance the island’s appeal to tourists.

Entitled Asia 2020, the Closing Plenary of the TFWA Asia Pacific Conference will explore the shopping behaviour of tomorrow’s Asian traveller.
Jorge Rodriguez, Director of brand development consultant Brand Alliance, will share exclusive research on ‘Generation Y’ shoppers, whose aspirations and behaviour will shape the way brands and retailers market their products. Shubhodeep Pal, Vice President of Simpliflying, an aviation marketing consultancy, will explore how mobile connectivity will transform the way customers behave, and how stakeholders can take advantage within the travel chain.
This final session will be moderated by John Rimmer, Conference, Research and Corporate Affairs Director, TFWA.
