Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat hosts luxury travelers on a 66-hectare Mackenzie Region estate, nestled on ancient glacial moraine between the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki and the majestic Ben Ohau ranges.
Villa Puaka is the newest luxury villa at Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat, with views to rival any guest accommodation in the world. The villa is situated in a dramatic spot overlooking the turquoise blue waters of Lake Pukaki and the snowy peaks of Aoraki Mount Cook and the Southern Alps. Restful and light-filled, the villa is designed in the style of a European farmhouse, with thick 600mm walls, high wood ceilings, Italian sandstone flooring, leadlight windows and double glazing. It is a very quiet and private space on the Retreat with french doors opening from every room to the large garden area.
“We have designed this villa to create a restful and private stay where guests will feel embraced by the villa’s design and the ancient moraine on which the villa sits. There is a real sense of isolated wilderness here with a big Mackenzie sky above and wide-open views across the lake and to the southern alps. Our favourite rooms in the villa are the large with a picture window framing Aoraki Mt Cook. Despite material shortages, we have built and furnished the villa with the same love and attention, accessing the some beautiful products, quite a feat in these post COVID times. We are all very excited to open the doors on the 22nd.”
Puaka, a two-bedroom villa that can host up to four guests, is the latest addition to Mt Cook Lakeside Retreat’s portfolio of luxury villas and premium visitor experiences. A stay at Puaka includes a 3-course evening meal prepared by our cuisine team using local fresh ingredients, many of which are grown at the Retreat.

The Retreat is located just 5 minutes’ drive from Twizel, on the doorstep of Aoraki Mount Cook National Park. It is also accessible by helicopter.
