Tigerair Australia launches new Brisbane – Darwin services

The new daily service between Brisbane and Darwin delivers 2,500 visitor seats weekly through Darwin Airport and it is the third new route launched in April.

Responding to strong demand from the budget, leisure and adventure markets, Tigerair Australia is officially launching its new daily return services between Brisbane and Darwin, providing over 2,500 additional visitor seats weekly through Darwin Airport.

This is welcome news for the “Top End” as well as Queensland tourism and closely follows the launch of Tigerair’s Brisbane base which provides a significant boost in visitor seats annually through the sunshine state and creates 200 associated jobs.

Fares for the new Brisbane – Darwin service are on sale from midday 15 April (AEST) each way, as are fares for the second new route (Brisbane – Cairns) also being launched by Tigerair.

Tigerair Australia CEO Rob Sharp said “Darwin represents a gateway to the quintessential Northern Territory outback that thousands of budget, leisure and adventure travellers have on their personal bucket lists to go and experience.”

We’re a volume business and our network evolves based on demand for our services.”

In responding to this consumer demand it makes commercial sense to connect Brisbane, the heart of Queensland, with the top end and provide a cost effective means of getting quickly between the two. Today’s news also provides fantastic low fare options for Darwin residents wanting to travel to Queensland’s capital city.”

Minister for Tourism Matt Conlan said that adding another budget airline route to Darwin would stimulate more price conscious travellers to Do the NT.

This is great news for Darwin and for the Territory and once again underlines the confidence in the NT’s tourism industry,’’ Mr Conlan said.

Since it reintroduced services to Alice Springs last April, Tigerair has stimulated the price conscious travel market to holiday in Central Australia and I have no doubt that this Brisbane – Darwin service will do the same.’’

Minister for Transport Peter Styles welcomes the new services to Darwin.
Transport is the facilitator for achieving the Northern Territory Government’s vision for Darwin and the Territory to become Australia’s trading route and logistics hub into Asia. This can only be realised if we have strong aviation links.”

This is truly underpinned by today’s commencement of new services and I am delighted that our strong relationships with Tigerair and Darwin Airport have resulted in this great outcome.”

Northern Territory Airports CEO Ian Kew said he’s very pleased to see Tigerair continue to grow its presence in the Territory.

Darwin-Brisbane is one of our top three domestic markets and travellers will benefit from an increased airline choice on the popular route. With the Dry on its way, the new flights are timed perfectly for a whole range of passengers to discover Darwin.”

Six interstate journalists arrive on the inaugural flight at 15 April to promote Darwin and the surrounding region to backpackers and travellers from the Eastern States.
