The government will help promote tourism businesses in this central province of Ratchaburi, with emphasis to be placed on the province`s renowned floating market, according to Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

When revolving to work and visit people in Ratchaburi, the Thai leader and his entourage sailed along the Damnoen Saduak Canal, where the country`s most famous floating market is located.

The Thai leader then suggested that the province implement a homestay project, and organize other activities, namely the opening of Thai cuisine schools, to attract more foreign tourist arrivals.

I found that it has to take some times to come to the floating market here, as it`s a bit far from the province`s main areas. So, I think the province should launch a homestay project, encouraging local people and businesses to open their places as homestays to welcome and accommodate tourists visiting the floating market, he said.

It`ll also be good if the province organizes other interesting activities to promote local tourism businesses, namely the opening of Thai cuisine schools to teach foreign tourist arrivals on how to cook Thai food. The schools should have rooms of spaces where the visiting tourists can also have their meals together, he added.

The Thai leader said that the government was ready to support the initiatives by approving low-interest loans for local people and entrepreneurs to launch the homestay project, and to open the Thai cuisine schools, and by helping publicize the initiatives through the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

He also instructed governor of the Ratchaburi Province, Mr.Polawatra Chayanuwachara, to improve the old 6-kilometre Damnoen Saduak Canal by cleaning and digging the canal, as well as developing its amenities to be more attractive, with the local people`s traditional way of life along the canal be conserved as a tourist attraction.

The Thai leader also visit the province`s one tambon, one product (OTOP) projects, including its famous `dragon jars`, whose designs had been developed to meet changing consumption styles of the Thai people.

Premier Thaksin said that the government would also support skill training in specific areas for students and youths so that they could apply the skills for developing products based on traditional Thai knowledge in the future, which would also create new jobs with more incomes for local communities.

Yesterday was the third consecutive day of the Thai leader`s initiative to revolve to work and visit provincial areas, aimed at monitoring progress of the government`s policies in the areas, as well as bringing himself closer to local people to get first hand information from them on the situation in the provinces.

On the first day, 31 March, the Thai leader visited Saraburi, Lopburi, and Nakhon Sawan Provinces, followed by Chacheongsao, Prachinburi, and Nakhon Nayok Provinces on 1 April, and Ratchaburi and Nonthaburi Provinces on 2 April. (TNA)
