PATA Thailand supports a 100% Ministry of Tourism

PATA Thailand strongly believes that this is the right time for the Government to take the strategic decision to adopt the practice of the major tourism developed countries and form the Ministry of Tourism.

According to the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC)’s Travel & Tourism Economic Impact 2014 Thailand, the Thai Tourism’s direct and indirect contribution to the GDP in 2013 was estimated to be 20.2%. This places it as the highest GDP contributor in the country.

In view of this and the current fall in tourist arrivals, PATA Thailand strongly believes that this is the right time for the Government to take the strategic decision to adopt the practice of the major tourism developed countries and form the Ministry of Tourism. Reflecting the importance of tourism to Thailand’s economy, a Ministry dedicated to formulating and overseeing tourism policy should be a core component of the Thai Government.

Since Tourism is an intersectoral industry falling under the competence of various other ministries, the Ministry of Tourism will be able to coordinate in a more effective way a wide number of diverse policies and developments with other Ministries as well as with the official trade Associations and Organizations of all the sectors of the travel industry so that Thailand’s Tourism remain strong, vibrant, and responsive to the challenges that the AEC is bringing.
