Malaysia`s proposal that the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) establish a centre for tourism received the backing of senior officials who met here on Saturday ahead of the 10th OIC Summit.

It will now be forwarded to the OIC foreign ministers who will meet for two days beginning Monday to finalise the agenda for their leaders` summit on Thursday.

A senior OIC official said the proposed centre was aimed at boosting tourism, which had been identified as among the major areas to bolster cooperation in the 57-member organisation.

The ministers will further discuss the proposal, the official said after the one-day Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) at the Putrajaya Convention Centre here.

The idea was mooted at the OIC Tourism Ministers meeting in Kuala Lumpur in September last year.

The SOM, chaired by Foreign Ministry Secretary-General , discussed the agenda to be taken up by their ministers.

It welcomed Malaysia`s initiative to organise a brainstorming session that would address issues of importance to the OIC.

The theme of the brainstorming session is Knowledge and Morality for Unity, Dignity and Progress of the Ummah, according to a draft report of the meeting.
