MyCEB initiates public private partnership for 2019 Ironman 70.3 Langkawi

Hosting of IRONMAN Langkawi is indeed in line with the Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign and the target of MOTAC in achieving 30 million tourist arrivals by 2020

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Langkawi will once again be the focus of world media and sports enthusiasts when it hosts the IRONMAN 70.3 Langkawi for the sixth time. The prestigious event will kick off at 7:45 am on 26 October 2019.

Supported by Malaysian Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), an agency under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture Malaysia (MOTAC), the event provides MyCEB the unique opportunity to collaborate with a wide field of industry partners in the promotion of Malaysia as an ideal international events destination for major global sporting events such as IRONMAN.

Langkawi, ranked top 10 most popular island in the world, will offer participants a varied and challenging racecourse through lush tropical rainforests with wet, hilly and demanding terrain unlike any other. Indeed, it is a truly Malaysian cultural journey that passes through stretches of white sandy beaches, local villages, endless mangrove clusters, flora and fauna inhabited serene vistas that are hot and humid.

To demonstrate this fruitful collaboration, MyCEB gathered the strength of capable personnel from the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF), Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) and members of corporate sectors to join hands as team athletes and will wear MyCEB armbands throughout this challenging event. Apart from literally adding muscle to this collaborative initiative, it also demonstrates to everyone that many Malaysians, whether in uniform or not, are healthy, ready and capable to participate in extreme sports events.

“Last year, around 5,800 attendees gathered for IRONMAN Langkawi bringing in around RM 16.5 million in tourist expenditure. This year, IRONMAN Langkawi is forecasted to bring in an estimated RM 20.9 million in tourist expenditure to the country, said Datuk Zulkefli Hj. Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of MyCEB.

On this pre-event announcement, Datuk Zulkefli had the honour to present the armbands to representatives from the team at the MyCEB office. The IRONMAN Triathlon series of extreme sports is without a doubt an iconic endurance sports that enthusiasts and participants from all over the world anticipate annually since its inception in 1978. As part of the Wanda Sports Group, headquartered in Beijing, the IRONMAN brand has proven in their slogan that Anything Is Possible and has a global roster of 230 events across 57 countries.

Malaysia in general and Langkawi, in particular, are proud to be a part of this global sensation, for the sixth time, and has sealed its recognition as an international sporting events destination. The attraction of Langkawi goes beyond sand, sea, sun and culture. Malaysian hospitality and culinary surprises add to the fact that it is also a duty-free island. As such, in the bigger picture, hosting of IRONMAN Langkawi is indeed in line with the Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign and the target of MOTAC in achieving 30 million tourist arrivals by 2020.
