Kempinski Hotels & Resorts expands in China with the management of a new hotel in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, an important business centre and known to leisure travellers as the home of the giant panda. Chengdu is two hours flight south west of Beijing, where the first Kempinski hotel in China (Kempinski Hotel Beijing Lufthansa Center) is located.

The Kempinski Hotel Chengdu is situated in the affluent south of the city, twenty minutes from the airport and five minutes from the central business district. It is scheduled to open in Spring 2004 and there will be 492 rooms, including 42 business suites, two luxury suites and an executive floor. There will be a ballroom (800 pax) and smaller meeting rooms, health club, karaoke room, 24-hour business centre, boutiques, airline ticketing office, limousine fleet and tour desk. Planned food and beverage outlets offering over 1000 seats will include an Asian Noodle Bar, Paulaner Restaurant and Deli, Cantonese Restaurant, Tea House and Lobby Lounge.

General Manager of the Kempinski Hotel Chengdu will be Robert Barsby, who has had a distinguished career within Kempinski, and who has an excellent knowledge of China, having been Managing Director of the Kempinski Hotel Beijing Lufthansa Center from 1993 to 1997.
