REPORT – UNWTO GENERAL ASSEMBLY – COLOMBIA: The country of Colombia is at the center of the international tourism industry during these days with its coastal city Cartagena des Indias to host the 17th General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).

The United Nations Millennium Development Goals, which UNWTO has to follow as the official UN tourism organization are at the top of the agenda. Another hot issue of this year’s General Assembly is the impact of tourism on the climate change and the impact of these changes to the tourism industry.

The World Tourism Organization aims to raise awareness of these issues to the international tourism industry so as the industry to take active role in the reduction of carbon emissions and pollution in general. Tourism is perhaps the first industry worldwide that is directly affected by the quality of the environment but has also the capability to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Moreover, one of the main priorities of the 17th General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization is the role that tourism can play in poverty alleviation worldwide considering the fact that it can help the economy of the developing countries and can create jobs.

For the first time at this year’s assembly the central conferences were split in two parts separating the works of the Ministers of Tourism from the works of their partners.

It is worth mentioning that the Association of Greek Tourist Enterprises (SETE) along with the Australian Tourism Task Force were elected presidents of the UNWTO Business Council in the elections that took place on Saturday (24 November 2007).
