Massive airport development and expansion across the Middle East, Africa and Indian Subcontinent and the major issues affecting operators, local authorities, airlines and passengers, came under the spotlight when the industry’s regional showcase event opened in Dubai.

Attracting a record assembly of suppliers from around the world, the Airport Build & Supply Exhibition was officially opened by Khalifa Al Zaffin, Director, Engineering Projects, Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), Dubai.

According to research carried out by the organisers, Streamline Marketing Group, airport development and expansions worth more than US$40 billion are currently taking place across the region, half of this in the UAE alone.

Almost 400 exhibitors – up 25 per cent on last year – have been attracted to the three-day event at Airport Expo Dubai, and by the chance to win contracts from projects such as the US$ 8.1 billion Dubai World Central International Airport.

The airport is a central part of Dubai World Central, the huge multi-phase development 40 previously known as Jebel Ali Airport City, which will serve the emirate’s passenger and cargo air transportation needs until 2050 and beyond, handling 120 million passengers a year.

The stakes are high for the exhibitors, who supply a huge range of products and services in four main areas – airport planning, design and construction, airport services such as passenger, baggage and cargo handling, airport technology, and airport operations

Each will have pre-arranged meetings with the Department of Civil Aviation, Dubai, as well as with buyers representing a record 18 civil aviation authorities from across the region – a 50 per cent increase on last year – including Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Egypt, Thailand and India.

Major projects which will be at the forefront of talks during the exhibition are the US$4.1 billion revamp of Dubai International Airport and the US$ 6.8 billion expansion of Abu Dhabi International Airport. Other developments include the US$ 5.5 billion is being invested in the New Doha International Airport in Qatar, and the US$ 1.5 billion expansion of the King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah.

Khalifa Al Zaffin was accompanied by Laith Kubba and Nick Webb, directors of Streamline Marketing Group, as he cut the ribbon to officially inaugurate the exhibition. He then toured the exhibition hall, chatting with representatives of companies offering a vast array of products and services vital to the day-to-day running of airports.

The event also includes a busy three-day seminar programme. International experts will be addressing issues such as the problems airports face in coping with the new generation of super jumbo aircraft, the difficulties in keeping terminal buildings passenger friendly as air traffic volumes soar, and managing the threat of fires at airports.

The exhibition features dedicated national pavilions hosting suppliers from a wide range of countries including Germany, UK, the Netherlands, France, China, Australia and Denmark.

The event enjoys the support of industry leaders including Netherlands Airport Technology Group (NAT), German Airport Technology and Equipment (GATE), British Airports Group (BAG), UBIFRANCE, the Society of Indian Aerospace Technologies & Industries (SIATI) and British Airport Services and Equipment Association (BASEA). The exhibition runs from 10 am to 6 pm daily, and attendance is free for trade visitors.
