21 Singaporeans ready to set sail as Tourism Ambassadors

Singapore, The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) today announced the names of 21 bold and adventurous individuals who have been selected to represent Singapore in the Clipper 05-06 Round the World Yacht Race. These 21 individuals were selected for their outstanding personal attributes and the ability to act as Singapore`s roving tourism ambassadors. The crew members represent the spirit of Singapore and will share the uniqueness of Singapore with their fellow sailors as well as the people of every port city that they visit.

Mr Ken Low, Acting Assistant Chief Executive, Brand & Communications, STB said, We are pleased that Singaporeans have stepped forward to take on this challenge. The quality of applicants was very high and the selection process was no easy task. The final 21 selected are truly exceptional individuals; they are all prepared to rise to the challenge to represent their country and seize this opportunity of a lifetime. The selected tourism ambassadors are from all walks of Singapore life, from hawkers to businessmen, both male and female, of all races and ages. It is this diverse fabric of Singapore which makes our country such a unique destination and this is what we want to share with the rest of the world as we compete in this prestigious international round the world yacht race.

The STB is subsidising 50 per cent of the cost of participation for one leg of the Clipper 05-06 for each of these 21 individuals. The remaining 50 per cent of the cost must be sourced by the individuals themselves either through personal funds or through private or corporate sponsorships.

This is the first time that Singapore is competing in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race and also the first time that Singapore is a destination on the race route. On the fourth leg, as the yachts race from Western Australia to China in early 2006, the ten yachts will dock in Singapore`s Sentosa Cove for ten days in mid-January. Sentosa Cove will also be the site of a fun-filled festival village where Singaporeans can come and see all the yachts and meet the crews as well as enjoy all of the fringe activities and festivities.

Today also sees the announcement of PSA`s sponsorship of the Uniquely Singapore. PSA joins the STB and Sentosa Leisure Group in supporting Singapore`s involvement in this international event.

Commenting on PSA`s involvement, Ms Caroline Lim, Head of Corporate Communications PSA said: PSA sees sponsoring the Clipper 05-06 Round the World Yacht Race as a unique opportunity to firstly get behind our local citizens in this international challenge and make Singapore proud and secondly, to showcase Singapore`s major assets to the rest of the world. One of Singapore`s largest, most successful and longest standing industries is its port and PSA are proud be helping Singapore to showcase our thriving industries and rich and exciting culture to the rest of the world.

The Clipper 05-06 race starts from Liverpool, United Kingdom on 18 September 2005 but before Uniquely Singapore`s crew sets sail, each crew member has to undergo an intensive three-stage training programme in the UK. Stages A and B will take place in April / May and stage C will take place in August. By the end of stage C, regardless sailing experience, each crew member will be fully qualified to sail on the high seas. The cost of completing the compulsory training package is S$8,552 and does not include the individual`s airfare. The cost of participating in each leg of the race is between S$10,000 and S$12,000, excluding airfare to and from the race destination.

Ms Jacintha Thannimalas, a 27-year-old lawyer is one of the 21 crew members selected by the STB to represent Singapore. Commenting on her successful application to be a crew member on board the Uniquely Singapore Ms Thannimalas said, It is a privilege to be chosen to represent my country. There is so much that is great about Singapore, our diverse culture, our rich heritage and our delicious food. I look forward to sharing these wonderful attributes with the international community who we will meet on our voyage. I know it is going to be a challenge as I have no previous sailing experience but this is a real once in a lifetime opportunity and a story which I will be proud to tell my grandchildren.

43-year-old Mr James Lim Cheng Yong, another of the 21 selected is a self-employed hawker. Commenting on why he applied to take part in the Clipper 05-06 race Mr Lim said, You have to set yourself goals in life, to learn new skills and constantly challenge yourself. I have participated in many challenging sporting activities throughout my life but this is without doubt one of the biggest and most exciting. I am pleased to have been selected to represent my country and look forward to getting started on the training programmes as soon as possible.

The 21 individuals announced today make up only a percentage of the crew who will sail on the Uniquely Singapore in the Clipper 05-06 race. Singapore citizens and permanent residents can still sign up for a place on-board, on the basis that they will fund themselves, until the 28 February. The final crews for all the ten yachts competing in the Clipper 05-06 race will be announced on 4 June 2005.
