HKIA records mild passenger and flight movement growth in May

Growth has been shown in passengers and flights to and from Southeast Asia and Japan in the Hong Kong International Airport in May 2016 compared to the same period last year.

HONG KONG –  Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) recorded a mild growth in passenger and flight movement in May 2016. During the month, passenger traffic and flight movements increased by 1.4% to 5.8 million and 0.7% to 34,370 respectively, compared to the same month last year. Cargo traffic declined by 1% to 362,000 tonnes during the same period.

Rising passenger numbers in May were mainly driven by a 4% year-on-year growth in travel by Hong Kong residents. Traffic to / from Southeast Asia and Japan recorded the most significant increases.

Henry Ma, General Manager, Market and Connectivity Development of Airport Authority Hong Kong, said, “We are pleased that HKIA’s extensive flight network continues to grow. HK Express will introduce direct thrice-weekly passenger service to Takamatsu, Japan in July, offering more choices and greater convenience to travellers during the summer holidays.”

During the first five months of 2016, HKIA handled 29.4 million passengers and 170,960 flight movements, an increase of 5.0% and 2.5% respectively from the same period last year. Cargo traffic decreased by 2% to 1.7 million tonnes.

On a rolling 12-month basis, HKIA handled 69.9 million passengers and 410,250 flight movements, marking a year-on-year increase of 6.3% and 3% respectively, while cargo throughput declined by 1.3% to 4.34 million tonnes.
