Austrian startup SnapShot names CEO, announces expansion plans

Tweraser's appointment as CEO of the Big Data startup comes at a time when it's revving up for a hospitality analytics breakthrough. The startup is on the verge of launching of a powerful, yet streamlined analytics platform, which has been in beta testing for the last several months.

SnapShot GmbH’s chief executive officer, Ex-Google Germany chief, Dr. Stefan Tweraser has said that the close involvement of the startup’s Asian investors was one of the major factors that enticed him to join the company.

Tweraser’s appointment as CEO of the Big Data startup comes at a time when it’s revving up for a hospitality analytics breakthrough. The startup is on the verge of launching of a powerful, yet streamlined analytics platform, which has been in beta testing for the last several months. When it launches, SnapShot will be the first predictive analytics platform tailored specifically for hoteliers, designed to help them tap into the massive amounts of data amassed by hotels, data that’s currently locked away in customer relationship management (CRM) systems.

The hotel tech industry is ripe for revolution. Hotels have never had so much data, but still they fail to use it effectively and completely,” Tweraser said.

Tweraser, who has been involved with SnapShot for some weeks already despite only taking up the CEO role in an official capacity today, said that his new company’s partnership with Beijing Shiji Information Technology Co., better known as “Shiji Networks”, was crucial to helping it achieve its vision of helping hotels unlock the secrets of their Big Data.

We’re lucky in that we have truly strategic investors who support our vision and help to bring it along. It’s about much more than just the money,” the CEO explained.

If you’re unfamiliar with Shiji Networks, your ignorance can be forgiven. The company is still a relative unknown one in the west, but in China it’s a totally different story. Shiji was founded by a man whom Forbes not so long ago tagged as “Alibaba’s secret weapon”, – Chinese entrepreneur Li Zhonghchu – who boasts of almost single-handedly transforming China’s hotel tech scene over the last 17 years.

Shiji Networks today is a powerhouse of China’s IT industry, particularly in the hospitality sector, where it provides IP solutions to more than 6,000 hotels and related businesses around the country. More recently, Shiji made headlines when it teamed up with Alibaba Group Holdings Ltd.’s Alitrip Travel service in a deal that will see SnapShot’s analytics platform offered to Chinese hoteliers along with some of Shiji’s own products.

Our short-term focus with the Snapshot Analytics dashboard is in Europe,” Tweraser said. “However, given that we have Shiji as large and strategically important investor we are setting our sights on the Asian market already.

Tweraser, who previously served as Google’s chief marketing head in Germany, said that SnapShot possesses an unmatched level of expertise in the hospitality industry, and not just because of Shiji’s involvement. He pointed out that the company’s co-founders, David Turnbull and Michael Heinze, both have extensive backgrounds in hospitality and possess a real understanding of the kinds of insights hoteliers need to make a difference to their bottom lines.

The smart utilization of what you could call “Big Data” in the hospitality industry will have a huge impact on hotel’s bottom lines, and it would improve the guest experience at the same time,” Tweraser said. “SnapShot [has the ability to] to deep-dive into the hospitality industry, to understand the ins and outs, and provide value and help solve key problems. That’s the kind of expertise we can offer”.
