Indonesia sets an ambitious target of 14.3 million foreign tourists in 2024, emphasizing sustainable tourism aligned with global trends and boosting its economy and job creation initiatives.

In a pivotal move towards sustainable tourism, Indonesia, led by Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno, is setting an ambitious target of attracting 14.3 million foreign tourists in 2024. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to align with the increasing global popularity of green tourism.

Addressing the Asia-Pacific Tourism Conference in Bali, Uno stressed the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to ensure sustainable tourism practices in Indonesia. He highlighted three emerging tourism trends—ecotourism, cultural tourism, and adventurous tourism—as key areas of focus. These trends, he noted, are essential to attracting a diverse and environmentally conscious tourist demographic.

The emphasis on ecotourism is particularly significant, with initiatives such as promoting electric vehicle use and green energy accommodations. These efforts are expected to enhance the appeal of Indonesia’s natural attractions while preserving its environmental integrity.

The minister’s aspirations for the tourism sector are not just about numbers; they reflect a commitment to sustainable development. He emphasized the potential of this sector to benefit approximately 46 million tourism-related workers in Indonesia, alongside creating new job opportunities in line with the nation’s goal of opening 4.4 million new jobs.

Indonesia’s tourism sector has already shown promising signs of growth. In the previous year, the country recorded 11.5 million foreign tourist visits, surpassing the initial target of 8.5 million, with Bali alone contributing around half of this figure.

The target of 14.3 million foreign tourists for 2024 is not only a significant leap in numbers but also a testament to Indonesia’s dedication to sustainable tourism practices. This goal positions Indonesia as an emerging leader in eco-conscious travel, set to make a substantial impact on the global tourism stage.
