Norwood Young: Bringing Soul to Bangkok

In “Trends,” host David Barrett explores Norwood Young’s journey from Hollywood to Bangkok, highlighting his culinary ventures and his impactful music and personal transformation.

In the latest episode of “Trends” (Season One, Episode 19), host David Barrett sits down with Grammy-nominated R&B soul sensation, Norwood Young. An American whose journey has taken him from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to the vibrant streets of Bangkok, where he’s been residing for the past five years.

In this exclusive video interview, Norwood opens up about his life-changing decision to move to Bangkok and the inspiration behind his successful venture, the Hollywood Soul Supper Club. He was the first to introduce authentic Soul Food dishes on a Bangkok menu.

But Norwood’s story isn’t just about his culinary and vocal adventures. It’s a tale of resilience, healing, and rediscovery. Battling childhood trauma, he embarked on a transformative journey, reversing multiple plastic surgeries and penning the soul-baring book, “Getting Back to My Me.” In a transformative move, he decided to sell his fame-laden mansion, redirecting his focus back to the heart of his passion—music.

But why Bangkok? In the interview, Norwood describes the city as a perfect blend of authenticity and metropolitan charm. “It’s very metropolitan, but in certain areas, it keeps its authenticity, which makes it beautiful,” he shares. “The best of both worlds.”

Norwood’s mark on the Thai capital extends beyond his residency; he founded the Hollywood Soul Supper Club and Sunday Brunches, delivering soulful R&B vocal sets alongside a delectable buffet of Soul Food favorites. Despite their success, the overwhelming management led Norwood to gracefully step aside, redirecting his energy to new projects.

As the Saturday night headliner at Bangkok’s Abandoned Mansion, a jazz club exuding elegance and opulence, Norwood brings his unique brand of soul to a captivated audience every weekend. The setting, reminiscent of a gangster hangout with crystal chandeliers, sets the stage for an unforgettable night of music.

But Norwood’s creativity doesn’t stop there. He’s currently working on his second book, a follow-up to “Finding Me,” and has new music in the pipeline, teasing the possibility of another album. With projects simmering in the background, Norwood Young is poised to keep the soul of Bangkok pulsating with his R&B rhythms.

In this not-to-be-missed video interview, Norwood Young shares the highs, the lows, and the rhythm that keeps him going, ensuring that the soul of Bangkok continues to resonate with his electrifying beats. Tune in to “Trends” and witness the magic unfold as Hollywood Soul meets Bangkok in a celebration of life, music and the indomitable spirit of Norwood Young.
