Melbourne has been named host city for the World Indigenous Peoples` Conference on Education (WIPCE) in 2008.

The five-day event will attract about 4000 delegates from indigenous communities around the world.

It is expected to inject about $21.6 million in to the Victorian economy.

State Tourism Minister John Pandazapoulos said the event would be a boon for the Victorian hotel industry, accounting for 13,000 room nights.

It would also be a celebration of indigenous cultures worldwide.

Victoria`s culturally diverse society will welcome this chance to strengthen indigenous organisational capacity and community leadership, Mr Pandazopoulos said.

There will be a series of cultural events held in association with the conference at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl and sites of cultural significance to indigenous people across Melbourne.

The conference will be held in December 2008.
