Increased Etihad flights to boost Qld tourism

More than 54,000 extra international visitors will have access to Queensland each year via Etihad Airways’ new daily service between Abu Dhabi and Brisbane, which began on February 2.

BRISBANE- Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said the new daily service into Brisbane would provide a boost for Queensland’s tourism industry. “Brisbane and the bulk of Queensland tourism destinations are accessible and ready to welcome visitors,” Ms Stuckey said.

“The Newman Government’s strategic approach to attract new aviation routes and flights has been important in helping to restore Queensland’s pre-eminence as a tourist destination. We established the $8 million Attracting Aviation Investment Fund to secure new aviation business and routes into Queensland.

“The renewed confidence in the tourism industry has already seen new international flights into Queensland by China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Jetstar.

“These additional Etihad flights will continue to boost the Queensland tourism industry by attracting more international tourists, which is critical to growing jobs in the tourism industry into the future. Etihad Airways operates an expansive network, and with ports in approximately 50 countries, the additional flights will open Queensland up to more travellers from across the globe.”

Etihad Airways President and Chief Executive Officer James Hogan said the new schedule of daily flights into Brisbane would help cement the airline’s position in the Queensland market and grow its market share.

“The additional four flights a week more than doubles the number of seats we currently fly between Brisbane and our hub in Abu Dhabi,” Mr Hogan said.

“This is a big plus for Queenslanders in terms of airline choice and travel convenience and a major stimulus for tourism to the State.”

Ms Stuckey said Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) was working in partnership with the airline to run a marketing campaign, aimed at encouraging UK travellers to take advantage of the daily service and book a holiday in Queensland.

“In partnership with Etihad Airways and Australian travel specialists Austravel, TEQ is promoting Queensland holiday deals via online, social media and print channels, as well as through radio and outdoor advertising,” Ms Stuckey said.
