Singapore to set up air traffic management research center

SINGAPORE- The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore and a university will jointly set up a research center by 2014 to develop innovative air traffic management solutions, the authority said on Wednesday.

The centre will test and eventually put in place air traffic management solutions to increase air traffic capacity in the long run, as Changi Airport put in place short- to medium-term measures.

The moves are aimed to ensure the airport, one of the busiest in the world, stays ahead of the potential congestion and delays that an increase in travel demand will bring.

The research center will draw together not just air traffic management researchers but those who run day-to-day airport operations like air traffic controllers and engineers.

The authority will pump in 50 million Singapore dollars (40.3 million U.S. dollars), while the Nanyang Technological University will make an in-kind contribution of 22 million Singapore dollars (17.7 million U.S. dollars) over the next five years.

The money will be used to fund selected post-graduate projects that will cover areas such as better weather forecasting, and more efficient but safe aircraft-to-aircraft separation.
