ITT joins with educational partnership to serve young people

Dr. Steven Freudmann, Chairman of The Institute of Travel and Tourism  (ITT) announced that ITT has signed an agreement with the Global Travel and Tourism Partnership (GTTP) to manage the GTTP’s program in the United Kingdom as part of ITT’s move to expand its work with young people seeking careers in the industry.

Claire Steiner, ITT board member and chair of ITT’s Education and Training Committee, will become GTTP UK Director, and leading organisations including TUI (UK) and The Co-operative Travel Group have confirmed their support and representation on the UK Advisory Board for GTTP.

Steven Freudmann said: “This latest collaboration is another demonstration of ITT’s commitment to improving links with education and promotion of careers within our sector. It supports our endorsement of the Diploma in Travel and Tourism and we are delighted to be able to help promote the GTTP both within the UK and globally.” Freudmann is also Chairman of Alpha Prospects plc which owns a number of travel agencies and tour operators and was elected Chairman of The Triton Travel Group in 2008. In July 2009 Steven was awarded a Doctorate by Leeds Metropolitan University.  He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts. td

Ian Wheeler, Chair of the GTTP Global Advisory Board added, “The GTTP UK was one of the first secondary school Travel & Tourism education programs started by our industry, and it now acts as a mentor to our new members in developing countries. The GTTP UK’s experience coupled with that of ITT will contribute enormously to the development of our member programs.” Wheeler is vice president of Marketing, Amadeus IT Group SA. He is responsible for worldwide marketing activities for Amadeus,  which provides technology to providers, sellers, and buyers of travel.

GTTP serves more than 557,000 students in ten countries, including the UK. Local school systems provide teachers and classrooms. Local and international businesses provide financial and in-kind support. GTTP country program managers provide curriculum materials developed by GTTP, teacher training and administer GTTP student competitions.

The GTTP provides a Travel &Tourism school curriculum called ‘Passport to the World’, which has been translated into several languages. Teachers delivering ‘Passport’ have to undergo a specific training programme. In countries with a national T&T curriculum, ‘Passport’ is used to supplement.

In 2008 the ITT formally recognised the GTTP scheme and the ITT logo is displayed on their certificates.

‘Passport’ will be offered by the ITT as an optional resource for teachers delivering the Diploma in Travel & Tourism, which starts being taught in England from September 2010.
The ITT will also administer student competitions that are open to secondary school students studying T&T. These are:
– A travel writing competition (winners receive a prize)
– A selected topic research and case study writing competition (winners attend a global student teacher conference in Europe)

Steiner represents ITT on a number of industry committees – she is Chair of the Steering Group for the Accredited Travel Professional Scheme, a member of the National Advisory Council for T&T at City and Guilds and chaired the reviewing board for the National Occupational Standards. Since 2007 she has been actively involved with the Diploma in Travel and Tourism as Chair of the Quality Group and member of the Steering Group working closely with People 1st, Go Skills and other stakeholders.
