Male’ City Council and Dutch Docklands Maldives sign MOU on cooperation in building the Maldives’ First Floating City

Maldives Floating City is a floating community that is being constructed in a lagoon that is a five- minute speedboat ride from Male’ using the latest technology from the Netherlands.

MALE – Male’ City Council and Dutch Docklands Maldives have signed a Memorandum of Understanding yesterday on strengthening cooperation and collaboration in the construction of the Maldives’ first floating city.

Maldives Floating City is a floating community that is being constructed in a lagoon that is a five- minute speedboat ride from Male’ using the latest technology from the Netherlands. The floating city will comprise of 5,000 housing units that are tethered to the lagoon floor, and linked together to create a safe and comfortable environment.

The MOU was signed by Male’ City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muiz and Dutch Docklands Maldives Chief Executive Officer Paul H.T.M. van de Camp. Commenting on the MOU signing, Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said: “Finding adequate housing is one of the biggest challenges for the Maldives and is a problem that requires a quick solution. I am happy to collaborate on a project that seeks to address the issue through such an innovative approach”

It gives us great joy that the Male’ City Council is willing to support us in this pioneering project for the Maldives and the World. Through this project, we are not only addressing urgent housing issues, but also demonstrating an adaptation approach to rising sea levels due to climate change,” said CEO Paul H.T.M. van de Camp.

Dutch Docklands Maldives have previously signed a contract with Bison Maldives to start the construction of the first home of the floating city. These homes are due to be completed after Ramadan, after which they will be open for tours to the public.

The cutting-edge project was recently shortlisted as a finalist in the prestigious MIPIM Award, often dubbed the “Oscars for Global Development” for the category of “Best Future Mega Project.”
