Chicago

Chicago event showcases South Korea’s rich culture to Midwest travel professionals.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism and the Korea Tourism Organization brought the spirit of Korea to Chicago with its “Discover Your Korea” event to promote tourism from the Midwest region to South Korea in celebration of Visit Korea Year 2023-24. Hosted at the Blackstone Hotel, the event highlighted Korea’s rich culture, inviting travel industry professionals from Chicago and surrounding Midwest markets to immerse themselves in the wonders of this dynamic destination.

We are thrilled to bring a glimpse of the vibrant destination of Korea to Chicago and showcase the unique adventures that await visitors,” said Jaesok Park, executive director, of the Korea Tourism Organization, NY Office. “The Midwest market is incredibly important to us, and these promotional events will strengthen our connections with key decision makers with the goal of inspiring more visitors to experience Korea firsthand.”

In 2023, the number of U.S. tourists visiting Korea surged to 1.08 million, surpassing pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019 at 1.04 million. Preliminary data from the first quarter of 2024 indicates a remarkable growth of over 30% compared to the previous year, signaling a robust upward trajectory. The U.S. roadshow was strategically planned to capitalize on this positive momentum highlighting the increasing appeal of Korea as a top travel destination.

Event attendees learned about Korea’s captivating history, K-pop culture, and cuisine, all of which have secured Korea’s status as a premier tourist destination globally. The “Discover Your Korea” event also featured performances by Korean musicians and dancers from the Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago. The Korea Tourism Organization representatives shared valuable insights into the diverse cultural attractions, experiences, and cuisine awaiting travelers, inspiring the Travel Trade to make Korea a first choice when booking their clients on vacation.

Korea offers a captivating blend of urban excitement and natural wonders, highlighted by destinations such as:

  • Seoul: the dynamic capital of Korea, beckons visitors with its blend of ancient traditions and modern innovations. From its culinary scene and historic palaces to futuristic skyscrapers and vibrant nightlife, Seoul offers something for everyone.
  • Busan: Korea’s second-largest city, boasts stunning beaches, scenic mountains, and a rich cultural heritage. Visitors can explore ancient temples, relax on sandy shores, or indulge in fresh seafood at bustling food markets.
  • Gyeongju: A thousand-year-old city with a long history and culture representing Korea. Historic sites and ancient relics include temples, stone pagodas, palaces, and royal tombs throughout Gyeongju, so the modifier, “roofless museum,” suits it well.
  • Jeju Island: Located southwest of the Korean Peninsula, is the largest island of Korea and one of the most relaxing vacation spots due to its unique local atmosphere and beautiful natural environment. The volcanic lava tubes that make up nearly 10% of the island’s area are designated UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.

As travelers seek authentic experiences and unforgettable adventures, The Korea Tourism Organization extends a warm invitation to discover the magic of Seoul, Busan, Gyeonggi, Jeju Island and beyond.
