Tourism Malaysia showcased its ecotourism and sustainable tourism efforts at the MATKA Travel Fair in Helsinki, featuring new experiential tourism products and packages centered around Malaysia’s unique biodiversity.

Helsinki, 18 January 2024 – Tourism Malaysia had a significant presence at the MATKA Travel Fair, which took place at Messukeskus, Helsinki from 18th to 21st January 2024. The event aimed to spotlight Malaysia’s ecotourism and sustainable tourism initiatives.

Leading the delegation was Ms. Azimah Aziz, the Deputy Director of Tourism Malaysia’s International Promotion Division (America, Europe & Oceania). The team also included representatives from Sarawak Tourism Board, Sabah Tourism Board, and Langkawi Development Authority, all equipped with new experiential tourism products and packages centered around Malaysia‘s rich biodiversity.

Some of the featured products and packages included the Langkawi Geopark Green Package, Malaysia Archeotourism and Geotourism packages, Perlis Ecotourism packages, Endau Rompin National Park, Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark, and Sarawak Delta National Geopark.

In addition to these offerings, Sarawak Tourism Board brought a special cultural troupe that performed traditional Sarawakian dances and showcased local musical instruments such as the sape (string instrument) and nose flute twice daily. Visitors also had the chance to experience Malaysian cuisine through cooking demos and food sampling at the stand from January 19th to 21st.

Tourism Malaysia was optimistic about its participation at MATKA, as it provided an excellent platform to introduce Malaysian tourism attractions to Nordic travelers. This year’s special showcase aimed to highlight Malaysia’s breathtaking natural wonders, diverse cultural heritage, sustainable community-based tourism, and culinary delights, promising an extraordinary experiential journey.

In terms of visitor numbers, Malaysia anticipated welcoming over 8,100 Finnish tourists by the end of 2023, a substantial increase compared to the 4,091 recorded in 2022. After a remarkable surge in mid-2023, Malaysia revised its full-year international tourist forecast upwards by 18.63% to 19.1 million.

The next Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) is scheduled for 2026, with the government setting a target of 35.6 million foreign tourist arrivals, including those from the Nordic market.
