An initiative that aims to increase convention business in the historic Western Australian port of Fremantle has already resulted in the city securing a prestigious national conference for 2009. Officially launching the Fremantle Business Tourism Expansion Project, Mayor Peter Tagliaferri announced that the city had successfully bid to host the 7th National Mainstreet Conference.

“This is a major coup for Fremantle,” the Mayor said. “It will provide a significant economic boost to our economy and further enhance our reputation as both an important commercial and tourist centre.”

The Mainstreet conference, which deals with economic development and town centre revitalization, is expected to attract more than 400 delegates from all over Australia and New Zealand and inject nearly $600,000 into the local economy.

Mayor Tagliaferri said: “Our success in winning this premier event is the result of wider industry cohesion, matched with advocating the best of Fremantle to the rest of Australia. Through initiatives such as the Fremantle Business Tourism Expansion Project we will continue to advance as a serious business tourism and major event destination.”

The pilot project is being run by the Perth Convention Bureau in partnership with the City of Fremantle, the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce, and the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle.

It aims to identify specific conference bidding opportunities that mirror the historic port city’s industries, commercial business activities, academia and medical and health research sectors.

Says the Perth Convention Bureau’s General Manager Christine McLean: “In particular, we are looking at areas of excellence that are relevant to Fremantle, such as its maritime industry, the city’s preserved heritage and its strong connection to the arts and culture.”

The program has been operating since November with a Bureau researcher based at the Fremantle Chamber of Commerce one day a week, identifying and developing national and international conference bidding opportunities.
