The Executive General Manager of Qantas, Mr John Borghetti, said Qantas was named the world`s number two airline for the second consecutive year, behind oneworld partner British Airways. Qantas took the accolade in the prestigious Skytrax Awards – the world`s largest airline passenger survey.

Qantas also won the Best Airline-Australasia and Best Airline-Trans Pacific awards, for the third and second years respectively.

International aviation is one of the most competitive businesses in the world and it is a testament to Qantas` standards that we have held our number two ranking in both 2005 and 2006 while some very strong competitors experienced a fall in their survey ratings, Mr Borghetti said.

He said the Skytrax awards were regarded as a primary benchmarking tool for passenger satisfaction levels of airlines throughout the world.

Skytrax is judged by more than 13.6 million travellers, which makes this survey a particularly important indicator of our customers` satisfaction levels, Mr Borghetti said.

The Chief Executive Officer of Skytrax, Edward Plaisted said Qantas` second place, repeating its 2004/05 performance, demonstrated that Qantas was well established amongst the world`s top quality airlines.

The 2006 Skytrax awards involved a nine-month worldwide survey of over 13.6 million air travellers from 93 passenger nationalities who submitted nominations for the key Airline of the Year category, plus a wide range of regional and product and service categories.
