The number of foreign visitors to Australia in 2004 reached 4.8 million, increasing by 9 percent over the previous year, latest figures show.

Figures from Tourism Australia released on Tuesday found that 53 percent of the visitors traveled to Australia on holiday, while 21 percent were visiting relatives or friends.

Tourism Australia is the federal government statutory authority responsible for international and domestic tourism marketing as well as the delivery of research and forecasts for the sector.

The number of backpackers accounted for 10 percent of the overall visitors.

Most tourists came from New Zealand, with a 22 percent increase. This growth rate is followed by Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Each visitor spent an average of 2,458 dollars (1,930 US dollars)during their trip. They brought 11.8 billion dollars (9.3 billion US dollars) into Australia, 6 percent higher over 2003, according to the quarterly International Visitor Survey of Tourism Australia.

The survey also found that the state of New South Wales was the most popular destination, with 56 percent of visitors passing through the state, followed by Queens land (43 percent) and Victoria (27 percent).
