Vietnam launches first overseas tourism promotion office in Laos to boost sector

Vietnam announced its inaugural international tourism office in Vientiane, aiming to enhance its sector’s growth. The move is part of a strategic plan targeting pre-pandemic visitor levels and diversifying tourism promotion to include niche markets.

Vietnam plans to inaugurate its first international tourism promotion office in Vientiane, Laos. This strategic move is part of a broader initiative to make significant advances in the tourism sector.

Vietnam witnessed a substantial increase in tourism in the previous year, with foreign arrivals surging by 340% to reach 12.6 million, and domestic tourism also experienced a growth of 5.8%, totalling 108 million travellers. The target for the current year is to attract 17-18 million international tourists, returning to pre-pandemic figures, alongside aiming for 110 million domestic visitors.

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) has recently finalized its tourism development plan for the period 2025-2030, extending its vision to 2045. This comprehensive strategy, which awaits the Prime Minister’s approval, aims to define the future direction of the tourism industry.

Key to this strategy is the transformation of tourism promotion efforts to focus on niche segments including community, medical, rural tourism, MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions), golf, and rail tourism. Establishing overseas promotion offices is a critical step in this direction, addressing what has been identified as a gap in Vietnam’s tourism strategy compared to other nations. The Vientiane office marks the beginning of these efforts, intending to bridge connections with travellers from Thailand and Cambodia, enhancing Vietnam’s visibility and attractiveness as a tourism destination.
