Tourists from 134 countries across the world have voted Thailand their number one tourist destination in the prestigious Lonely Planet magazine.

Not only did visitors to the Lonely Planet website put Thailand at the top, ahead of Italy, Australia, India and New Zealand, they also praised the kingdom for the warm welcome it extended to its visitors.

Thailand emerged as being particularly popular among young backpackers in the 18-34 age range, while marginally older tourists plumped for India.

The award comes at a time when Thailand`s tourism sector is winning a host of accolades from around the world.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently celebrated the fact that the director of its Seoul office in South Korea was awarded the `Outstanding Tourism Personality of the Year Award` for friendship enhancement by South Korea`s Travel Business Journal.

Mrs. Saichalee Wannapruek, who has directed the TAT`s Seoul office for four years, was praised for fostering relations with South Korea`s business sector, and for pushing up the number of South Korean visitors to Thailand to unprecedented levels. (TNA)
