The government believes Thailand`s tourism industry has not been damaged by the violence which has swept the country’s southern provinces since the beginning of the year.

Thailand’s tourism business is set to meet its target this year of generating nearly 400 million baht, the Sports and Tourism Minister, Sontaya Kunplome said.

Despite local tourist operators fears, tourism has continued to grow.

Some 25,000 foreign tourists have arrived at the Bangkok International Airport, or the Don Maung Airport so far this year, compared to 20,000 last year, said Mr. Sontaya.

The government has been actively supporting the local tourism industry by developing new tourist attractions, and planning special cultural and sporting events to draw in more visitors.

In the first seven months of this year, more than six million foreign tourists visited Thailand.

The government is confident that more than 12 million tourists will visit Thailand during the next tourist season which starts in October, Mr. Sontaya claimed.

This is despite the spate of violence and unrest in the South and the re-emergence of bird flu.

Thailand’s tourism industry has been growing rapidly since the slump last year, following the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic, Mr. Sontaya concluded.
