Singapore Changi Airport registered 4m. passenger movements in June 2011

Singapore Changi Airport registered 4 million passenger movements in June 2011, 10.8% more than in the same month last year. Aircraft movements grew in tandem, increasing 14.8% to 25,000 flights during the month. For the first six months of the year, Changi Airport handled 22.4 million passengers, an increase of 10.7% compared to the same period last year. Low cost carriers (LCCs) led the growth in passenger movements, increasing 25.2% while full service carriers grew 6.6%. One in four passengers who passed through Changi was carried on an LCC. Changi Airport handled 144,700 aircraft movements during the six months, an increase of 13.1% compared to 1H2010.

Year-to-date, Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia traffic has led the increase in passenger movements, rising 16.4% and 10.4% respectively. These two regions account for more than two thirds of passenger movements at Changi. Traffic to and from Eastern Europe rose 16.7% during the first six months, albeit from a relatively smaller base. For the first half of the year, Changi’s top five city links (in terms of passenger movements) remained largely unchanged; Singapore-Jakarta remained the busiest sector. Hong Kong replaced Kuala Lumpur at the second spot, with Bangkok and Manila completing the top 5.

Changi Airport continued to improve its connectivity to the world with seven new city links introduced since 1 January 2011. They include Helsinki in Finland and Sao Paolo in Brazil, which is the first point in South America to be connected to Changi. During the same period, four carriers – Air Macau, Finnair, Hong Kong Airlines and Taiwan’s TransAsia Airways joined Changi’s family of airlines.

Bouyed by the growth in intra-Asia trade, 908,700 tonnes of cargo passed through Changi Airport in the first six months of year, an increase of 3.3%. For the month of June, Changi handled 153,200 tonnes of cargo, up 2.3% year-on-year.

As at 1 July 2011, Changi Airport serves 100 airlines operating more than 5,800 weekly flights to some 200 cities in 60 countries and territories.
