Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport unveils new Terminal 3

The state-of-the-art new Terminal 3 development at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport will be operational.

SHENZHEN – The terminal at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport, China’s 4th largest airport, is the first to be designed by architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, from Studio Fuksas, and phase one has taken three years to design and build.

It is set to become an iconic landmark in Shenzhen, which is one of the fastest-growing cities in the world and will help boost its economic development.

Phase one of the project has seen 63 contact gates built, along with a further 15 remote gates, the first phase of the APM, traffic system, parking place, landscape, and a shopping centre.

The new terminal is the largest public building in Shenzhen at 5,381,955 sq feet and will increase the capacity of the airport by 58%, allowing it to handle up to 45mppa.

Studio Fuskas says the terminal design is image of a manta ray and features an external double ‘skin’ honeycomb motif that wraps the structure.

And the focal point of the design’s interior is the concourse located at the intersection of the building, consisting of three levels – departure, arrivals and services.

Studio Fuksas says it focused on processing times, walking distances, ease of orientation, crowding, and availability of desired amenities at the terminal.

The architect is engaged in two further building phases at Terminal 3, which is run by the Shenzhen Airport Co.

Phase two will see a remote passenger concourse constructed to add gates and the satellite terminal with operational rail stations and extension of the APM scheduled for completion by 2025.

Phase three will then see development of the airport’s west side, which will see the terminal fully operational and is expected to be completed by 2035.
