Only wild dolphin wwim permitted in NSW and only one of its kind in Australia.
PORT STEPHENS – Unique dolphin swims that immerse snorkellers in moving pods of wild, oceanic dolphins have started for the summer season off Port Stephens, 2½ hours north of Sydney, with live web broadcasts of the swims planned for early 2014.
Dolphin Swim Australia’s fourth annual, summer season of ‘extreme’ dolphin pod interactions will offer weekend, open-ocean dolphin swims from October, 2013, to May, 2014, with this summer the first to see a new high-tech, underwater camera system operating on the ‘Imagine’ catamaran used by Dolphin Swim Australia.
The world-first, high-definition video cameras will film snorkellers above and below the water interacting with moving dolphin pods, with the vision broadcast onboard ‘Imagine’ and, from early 2014, live to the internet, enabling global audiences to see Port Stephens’ famous, friendly dolphins in action.
Launched in 2010 and the only dolphin swim of its kind in Australia – and the only commercially permitted dolphin swim in NSW – Dolphin Swim Australia’s adventure tour immerses swimmers amongst a moving, wild dolphin pod, with snorkelling swimmers harnessed to a cable between the front bows of the moving catamaran. According to Dolphin Swim Australia, the short beaked common dolphins and oceanic bottlenose dolphins encountered on the tours are more excited to discover humans who can keep up with their pod than people merely sitting still in the water.
Joining the dawn dolphin swims are marine scientists who help guide the tours and conduct research on dolphin behaviour and populations.
Suited to confident swimmers over the age of 10, the dolphin swims run from the Nelson Bay marina from 6-10am on Saturdays and Sundays until May 25, 2014, and on selected weekdays during the peak summer holiday period.
