Safety briefings a standard operating procedure for Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre

Safety and security of delegates and visitors is a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for KLCC as it is widely know the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Safety and security of clients and guests are of paramount importance for the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysia’s most technologically–advanced, purpose-built facility for all kinds of events, more so when one considers the Centre has been the venue of choice for over 5,600 events and welcomed some 12.5 million guests since opening in June 2005.

Applauding recent comments by National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, the Centre’s General Manager, Datuk Peter Brokenshire explained that ensuring the safety of visitors is part and parcel of the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of any world-class operation. “As such, it is imbedded in our Occupational Safety and Health protocols to conduct a safety and emergency briefing for attendees before the start of any event; be it for a meeting of 20 or a conference of thousands of delegates. The Centre has also gone the extra mile and created a safety briefing video which provides continuity and consistency.

“Aligned with this of course, is staff training. All our team members are knowledgeable and familiar with the various emergency procedures, and trained to guide visitors to safety in the event of an emergency. They are also constantly reminded of the importance of being alert during any function held at the Centre.”

And all the efforts, including a low incidence track record, have been noted and acknowledged when the Centre was awarded the National Occupational Safety and Health (NOSH) Excellence Award 2011 in the Business Services category. The recognition reaffirms the Centre’s commitment to the overall safety and health aspects at the facility.

Lee in his comments proposed that safety announcements or briefings be practised at all functions organised by both public and private sectors involving big number of participants in a confined area like the hall or banquet and function rooms.

Such informative briefings, according to Lee, are essential to overcome any panic which may lead to a stampede, resulting in injuries or even death.

The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) is a component of the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) and is managed and operated by Convex Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a joint-venture company between KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd and AEG Ogden Pty Ltd, Australia.
