Russian travel agency promotes first North Korea ski tour since 2020

A Russian travel agency is offering the first tour to North Korea since 2020, featuring a ski trip to Masikryong Resort, marking a potential restart of North Korean tourism.

A Russian travel agency has recently launched a promotional campaign for what is purported to be the inaugural tour to North Korea post-Covid, offering an exclusive ski vacation at a premium resort near Pyongyang. This initiative marks a potential resurgence in tourism to North Korea, which had ceased its international tourist activities in early 2020 due to the global pandemic.

North Korea, mirroring global responses to the pandemic, implemented stringent health measures and sealed its borders, significantly impacting its tourism sector. However, this new offering, priced at $750, allows Russian tourists the opportunity to explore the Masikryong Ski Resort for a four-day excursion, as highlighted on the Vostok Intur travel agency’s website.

Previously, North Korea was known for its enigmatic and meticulously planned tours, offering a rare insight into one of the most secluded countries globally, under the leadership of Kim Jong Un and his predecessors.

Simon Cockerell, General Manager of Koryo Tours, confirms that this tour signifies the first such entry into North Korea since the border closure in January 2020. While acknowledging this development as a positive indication, Cockerell advises caution in anticipating a full-scale revival of North Korea’s limited tourist trade pre-pandemic.

North Korea has yet to formally announce the reinstatement of its tourism sector. Nonetheless, recent interactions between Pyongyang’s External Economic Relations Minister Yun Jong Ho and Oleg Kozhemyako, the governor of Moscow’s Maritime Territory Administration, hint at a potential elevation in economic cooperation between the two nations. This was reported following their meeting in North Korea in December, as stated by the state news agency KCNA.
