Tourism promotion in the BIMP EAGA is the next big thing that key tourism industry players in Philippines aims to develop. The Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) said a two-day high level meeting of promoting greater tourism and cross-border traffic in the sub-region will be the main focus of the meeting.

A joint tourism development cluster meeting of Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) will be held in Koronadal City on July 17 to 18 with more than 50 key representatives of the tourism sector expected to come up with a joint marketing and promotions within the four countries.

With the Philippines hosting the meeting, it also provides the opportunity for Mindanao-Palawan tourism players to take part in the discussion on how to sustain the tourism industry.

The status of the initiatives to promote BIMP-EAGA as the Dream DestinASIAN as well as to improve air connectivity within the growth area will be on top of the meeting`s agenda.

Discussions will also delved on other programs and projects such as the development of tour packages anchored on culture, adventure and nature (CAN) tourism destination in BIMP-EAGA, promotion of EAGA signature events, establishment of port-to-port air linkages, provision of incentives for airlines and shipping operators and production of collaterals promoting BIMP-EAGA tourism.

During the meeting, a BIMP EAGA workshop among airline and tour operators and travel agents will also be held with the objective of coming up with specific tour packages for viable air routes in the sub region. It will also tackle tourism marketing strategies.

The Arroyo administration is strongly pushing for tourism and air linkages with the effort to revitalize BIMP EAGA as a key strategy for developing Mindanao and Palawan.
