2nd UNWTO INTERNATIONAL CONFERERNCE ON TOURISM AND THE MEDIA – MARSA ALAM – REPORT: The conference of the UNWTO, Partnering with the Media in Challenging Times, starts today, at Marsa Alma, in Egypt. Organized in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism of Egypt, and featuring CNN as global media partner, ‘Partnering with the Media in Challenging Times’ is the second in UNWTO’s series of conferences on the relationship between tourism and the media. During the opening, H.E.Mourin Fakhry Abdel-Nour, Minister of Tourism of Egypt and Mr Taleb Rifai, Secretary-General of UNWTO will address speeches.

Yesterday, during a brief meeting with the international media the Minister of Tourism of Egypt said that Tourism in his country is absolutely safe, as all the areas of Egypt are quiet. “The demonstrations are only 1 kilometer around the Tahrir square, while our cities and resorts areas are very quiet, and our people very friendly with the tourists, who are more than welcome.”

Keynote speaker at the Conference is Mr Ben Wedeman, CNN Cairo Bureau Chief, who was the first western journalist to enter eastern Libya after the start of the revolution. In the afternoon session, there will be a round table analyzing the issue of Partnering with the Media in Challenging Times, with the following participants:

The conference will continue tomorrow with parallel working sessions on “Talking to the media – positioning your tourism story”, with Mark Leftly, Associate Business Editor, The Independent, UK and on “Social media: myths and reality – expanding the boundaries of journalism”, with Layla Revis, Vice-President Digital Strategy, Social@Ogilvy – Ogilvy & Mather.

Two parallel working sessions will analyze the topics of “Crisis communications – communicating amid uncertainty, with Dirk Glaesser Coordinator, Risk, and Crisis Management, UNWTO, and “Creating the tourism story”, with Michael Altenhenne, Senior International Correspondent, Deutsche Welle TV.

The conference aims by bring together members of the global media and communications officials from tourism administrations to debate where tourism fits in a news agenda dominated by economic and social upheavals. Also, it will offer an opportunity for tourism professionals to hone their communications skills especially by using the social media. Furthermore, insights will be provided into the running of a newsroom and how tourism officials can position their stories within the news agenda. Finally, the workshop on risk and crisis management will provide participants with practical tools to communicate effectively in times of crisis.
